How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned #37

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was a beautifully crafted and fun final installment of the trilogy.  Sky enjoyed it much more than Dusty, but both agree that the characters are compelling and the story was fun and well-paced.

Lessons Learned from How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Sky & Dusty: Pick your battles

  • Hiccup going out and taking out ships and freeing tons of dragons brought the dragon-hating world to his doorstep, and he finally encountered somebody he couldn’t defeat (at least at first).

Dusty: Never underestimate your opponent.

  • This is a ubiquitous lesson that movie characters, both good and bad, seem to forget all the time.

“Demon!”

Sky: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

  • Putting all the dragons in one place makes you a juicy target for dragon haters.

Dusty: If you run from your problems, they will catch up to you.

  • People hate those dragons, so they’ll just follow you to your new home.  Running does no good.

Sky: Don’t let your boss make a mistake.

  • Eret told Hiccup that Grimmel was the worst of the worst, but left it at that and it was obvious to the audience that this would lead to issues for Hiccup and his people.

If you missed it, last week we discussed Alita: Battle Angel.

Alita: Battle Angel | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned #36

Alita: Battle Angel was incredible!  Best manga/movie adaptation ever.  Perfect story, cool characters, amazing CG and action up the wazoo!

Lessons Learned from Alita: Battle Angel

Sky & Dusty: Don’t underestimate anyone

  • She’s tiny and harmless, until she unleashes her “panzer kunst” fighting style.

Dusty: Don’t sit by in the presence of evil.

  • If you allow evil to spread or go unchecked, you’re partly responsible for what happens.

You don’t want this fist coming at you

Sky: Never underestimate your opponent.

  • This is when you let your guard down and they strike. Or, you send one guy to handle the problem when 10-12 would’ve been more realistic.

Dusty: Don’t do things that your girlfriend would disapprove of.

  • Unless you want to give her an easy reason to dump you.

Sky: Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

  • All the hunter warriors knew this and as soon as Ido said, no more free repairs, they stopped.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned #35

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part was a lot of fun for Dusty, but Sky wasn’t such a fan.  Dusty enjoyed how they put lots of small new tweaks to things like songs and intros that they did in part 1.

Lessons Learned from The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part

Sky: How you respond to your situation is up to you. You can let it change you for the better, or for the worse.

  • Emmet allowed being stuck under the laundry machines turn him into a big jerk.  He became a victim.

Dusty: Don’t try to change someone else. The only person you can change is yourself. Also, you do not know what is best for the person. Maybe what you want is worse.

  • You goal should just to improve yourself daily, and be an asset or positive force in the lives of those around you.

Gotta love Emmett’s positive outlook

Sky: Know your parents. Some give open threats, others follow through. If you have the follow-through type of parents, you better do what they say.

  • If your mom’s going to make you put all the LEGO’s in storage, don’t tick her off.

Dusty: Communication is the key to relationships.

  • All movie/tv logic breaks down when characters don’t talk to each other.  Same thing happens in real life.

Sky: Do not act with a lack of information.

  • Emmet, if he would’ve listened to his friends who he came to save, wouldn’t have smashed Queen Whatevra’s home and caused the “ar-mom-ageddon”.

Dusty: It’s much easier to be friends than enemy.

  • Being cool and kind with others is the way to go.  Set aside your differences and work to build friendships as opposed to working on being better or putting them down.
  • Watch out for “resting bitch face”.  If they look angry/mad when resting, they’re an unhappy person in life. Angry face = angry life.

Bonus Lesson: Be yourself.  If others don’t like you for it, screw them.

So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993) | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned #34

So I Married an Axe Murderer was more enjoyable for Dusty than it was for Sky.  Maybe because the nostalgia brought him back to his college days watching it with buddies.  Yep, probably more enjoyable watching this one with friends.

Lessons Learned from So I Married an Axe Murderer

Sky: See the local sights as a tourist would.

  • I bet only half of the residents of San Francisco and the Bay area have been to Alcatraz or even walked the Golden Gate Bridge. That’s a shame.

Dusty: All yellow lights turn to red.

  • Pay attention to the warning signs.

Sky: Just share your concerns with the ones you love.

  • Ask her if she is the person you think she could be. If you logically came to this decision, she should understand.

Dusty: Never do open mic at a poet lounge.

  • Those places seem a bit pretentious, and neither of us would be comfortable there.

Sky: Google the person you’re dating or about to hire or get into business with.

  • As long as they give you their real name, there’s no more guessing if they’re an axe murderer or not.  And, because everyone looks at the socials nowadays, only put things there that you’re proud of.

Dusty: Never kiss your friend’s mom on the mouth.

  • She consider you a “right sexy bastard” now.
