Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) | Spoilers and Lessons Learned #45

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is better than the first!  More laugh out loud moments and both of us realize that when we think of Ace, scenes from part 2 more readily pop to mind than part 1.  We love it!

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls

Dusty: Bat poop (guano) is very valuable and can make many things.

  • Being so valuable, it makes sense that Cadby wanted it all to himself.  We now have a new business venture to pursue!

Sky: If they’re ecstatic when you leave the place you live, you’re doing it wrong.

  • The monks partying as he’s leaving means he was not so welcome there.  But, denial IS bliss.

Rhino birthing… peak physical comedy!

Dusty: Never show your balls.

  • Keep those undies on!

“It’s slinky, it’s slinky… everyone love a slinky!”

Dusty: Projectors are fun!

  • We all remember making shadow puppets back in school.

Here are Sky’s movie props

Wow, those critics… just… don’t… know.  33%?!  We’re with the audience at 72% on Rotten Tomatoes.

We have chosen Avengers: Endgame as the next movie we’ll learn from.

If you missed it, last week we learned from Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective holds up and is still incredibly funny!  This is the Jim Carey we fell in love with and it was fun revisiting this one.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Sky: If you’re struggling to pay your apartment rent at 35, you’re doing something wrong.

  • Ace’s career, while noble, isn’t so lucrative.  If you can’t keep the lights on, what good are you to the lost pets of the world?

Dusty: There is always time for good hygiene.

  • Pop dem pimples!

Instant replay… magical!

Sky: Blaming others for your issues will lead to your downfall.

  • Einhorn/Finkle became a police lieutenant and could’ve led a happy life if she’d just given up on her need for revenge.

Dusty: You need to be perceptive and come to conclusions if you want to be a detective.

  • Attention to detail is critical, and Ace has it as demonstrated by his schooling of the human detectives.

“He found Captain Winky!”

Sky: Don’t leave a calling card when you pull a fast one.

  • “You’ve been had by Ace Ventura”. You’re just inviting some jacked-up meathead to come find and pulverize you.

Dusty: Be persistent and never give up.

  • Ace wasn’t giving up.  When he hit a dead end, he went back to the start because there was obviously something missing.

Pretty low, but it’s pretty close with critics at 47% and the audience at 57% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Dusty has chosen Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls as the next movie we’ll learn from.

If you missed it, last week we learned from Shazam!

Shazam! | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned #43

Shazam! was a fun origin story with a character we knew nothing about.  They nailed the humor and the humanity with this foster family turned super hero family story.  Definitely a worthy inclusion in the DCEU.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Shazam!

Sky:  Everyone is more understanding if you step out ahead and admit your foibles.

  • The name Shazam is pretty child-like, and the fact that they poked fun at it in the movie (when Billy laughed at the name) and the trailer gets the audience on their side.

Dusty: Stand up for the little guy

  • It took the mention of a “mom”, but Billy turned back and stood up for Freddy against the bullies.  If someone can’t defend  himself, step up and lend a hand.

Not exactly heroic… yet

Sky: Kids need to feel loved, accepted and wanted.

  • Without his mother’s love, Billy Batson felt lost and alone in the world.  For all the parents out there, it’s very easy to show your child you love them.

Dusty: No matter what situation you are in, act cool.

  • Don’t let ’em see you sweat, nor that you don’t know what you’re doing!  But, it makes sense that a 14 year old wouldn’t be able to keep his cool when given super hero powers.

Flossin’!

Sky: Closure isn’t worth striving for.

  • Billy spent every moment looking for his mom.  Not exactly looking for closure, but to fill a gap in his soul.  Looking for closure means you probably live a life of regret and you’re also living in the past.  “Live in the NOW!”

Dusty: Look to the help of your family and friends.

  • Billy found his family and they all worked together to defeat Dr. Sivana and the 7 Deadly Sins.

What a consensus!  91% and 90% Rotten Tomatoes.  We agree.

Sky has chosen Ace Ventura: Pet Detective as the next movie we’ll learn from.

If you missed it, last week we re-aired Deadpool 2.

Deadpool 2 | Episode 42

Originally aired on 6.28.18 as our third episode.

Deadpool 2 was such a fun movie!  We loved it as much as the first.  The humor, the action, the superheroes and the villains… everything worked so well!

Lessons Learned from Deadpool 2:

Rules are made to be broken.

  • We both prescribe to this life lesson. You just have to accept the consequences.

Never do the superhero landing.

  • Deadpool does it and hurts his knee.

Family is not an F-word.

  • Family gives you something to fight for (just ask Dominic Toretto).

Know how to defend your home.

  • Deadpool, while a trained fighter, successfully defended his home (once he sharpened the cream cheese spreader and used better aim the second time).

Don’t follow Deadpool’s lead.

  • He led all but Domino to death due to his poor planning.

Real friends are there when you need them.

  • Colossus coming to Deadpool’s aid; Deadpool doing all he can for Firefist.
