Knives Out | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned

Knives Out was  a great murder mystery that up-ended the genre.  We loved the acting and the story progression.  It was surprising that Rian Johnson pulled this one off after making the disappointing The Last Jedi.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Knives Out

Listen to our episode on Knives Out

Sky: There’s always a lesson to learn.

  • That was a great scene and neat seeing how Harlan thought he was poisoned but then was still paying attention and learned a great way to murder somebody with morphine.  He even whipped out his notepad to jot it down.

Dusty: Be perceptive and pay attention to the world around you.

  • Marta (Ana de Armas) paid attention and realized that clues were left behind.  She smartly noticed them then worked to obscure those clues from Benoit Blanc (played by Daniel Craig).

What a great cast of characters.

Dusty: There are no such things as coincidences.

  • Every detective knows that things happen for a reason and everything is tied together.

Sky: Nobody responds well to ultimatums.

  • Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) told Richard (Don Johnson) to tell his wife about the affair or he would. That’s reason enough for murder for a lot of people.

Great acting across the board from de Armas, Evans and Craig.

Dusty: Don’t do things that put yourself in harms way.

  • What a stupid idea!  The maid tried to meet with Ransom (Chris Evans) in secret to expose him.  He’s capable of murder!  Stay away and involve the cops.

Love that knife display.

Sky: Don’t talk politics at a party.

  • It almost always leads to an argument.

Rotten Tomatoes scores:

  • The Audience: 97%
  • The Critics: 93%

Ford v Ferrari | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned

We both enjoyed the real-life story of Miles’ and Shelby’s Le Mans win in 1966 in Ford v Ferrari. Bale and Damon were incredible as the two that led to victory.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Ford v Ferrari

Listen to our episode on Ford v Ferrari

Dusty: Sometimes it is worth it to take huge risks and lay everything on the line.

  • Shelby put his entire company on the line when he was confident in his team and his driver.  Inspirational.

Sky: Don’t insult somebody who can do something about it.

  • Enzo Ferrari made a huge mistake by insulting the Deuce, which prompted Ford to “go to war” against Ferrari in Le Mans.

Great acting by Christian Bale (Ken Miles) and Matt Damon (Carroll Shelby).

Dusty: Leave everything on the track.

  • Put it all on the line, run it in the red, hit 7,000 when everything is on the line and winning is the only option.

Sky: Nothing great ever comes from one man. It’s always a team effort.

  • This win took Ford’s initiative, Shelby’s expertise and passion for racing and Miles incredible racing talents.

Ken Miles wasn’t just the driver, he worked to build the winning car as well.

Dusty: Never lie to your wife.

  • This is a critical lesson for every married man to learn sooner rather than later.  It doesn’t pay to get caught in any lie with your better half.

Shelby couldn’t race anymore, but he stuck with his love of cars and worked to accomplish the impossible.

Sky: Visualize perfection and go for it.

  • You know what perfect looks like, and even if it’s not attainable 100% of the time (like the perfect lap for Ken Miles) you must strive for it.

Rotten Tomatoes scores:

  • The Audience: 98%
  • The Critics: 92%

Check out last week’s episode on Hot Shots! Part Deux.

Hot Shots! Part Deux | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned

We love spoofs, and Hot Shots! Part Deux is one of the best of all time! Charlie Sheen, Lloyd Bridges and Valeria Golino knock this one right out of the park.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Hot Shots! Part Deux

Listen to our episode on Hot Shots! Part Deux

Gummy bears, gummy bears!  Sprinkles, sprinkles!

Sky: Use Fixodent.

  • Take a lesson from President Tug Benson – affix those dentures in place so you don’t freak out Prime Minister “Tojo”.

The ultimate movie prop.

Sky: Choose the table full of kids when you’re eating family style at a Chinese restaurant.

  • The President’s line about less than half of the commandos returning reminded Sky of how he chooses his seat at his family’s functions.

Lloyd Bridges (as President Tug Benson) was a shining star.  Especially when battling Saddam Hussein.

Sky: Don’t stand below the thing you’re trying to blow up.

  • Saddam Hussein stupidly ran under the chopper to blow it up.  But, worth it for the piano and the Wicked Witch gag.

You can’t have a Hot Shots! sequel without Ramada (played by the lovely Valeria Golino).

Rotten Tomatoes scores:

  • The Audience: 63%
  • The Critics: 57%

Check out last week’s episode on Terminator: Dark Fate.

The Terminator Franchise | Spoiler Reviews and Lessons Learned

We love the Terminator Franchise, with parts 1 and 2 being the best.  It’s gone downhill since then, but Sky enjoyed Dark Fate while Dusty wasn’t a fan at all.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch these movies before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Terminator: Dark Fate

Listen to our episode on Terminator: Dark Fate

Dusty: The best defense is a good offense.

  • The best part of T2 was Sarah Connor going after Miles Dyson and tries to take out Skynet.  They should do the same in this sequel.

Sky: Do the right thing now and come what may.

  • When you see someone in need, help them out like the couple did when Grace fell from the bridge.  But, no good deed goes unpunished…

The T-800 Terminator versus an incredibly powerful Rev. 9 (played by Gabriel Luna)

Dusty: Always have a backup plan.

  • The EMP was good, but just in case, don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Sky: Never give personal information to an unknown person.

  • With online phishing or stalkers or just bad people wanting to do you and yours harm, don’t give out information like, “All her friends call her Dani.”

Sarah Connor: still a bad-ass protecting Dani (Natalia Reyes)

Linda Hamilton, left, and Natalia Reyes star in Skydance Productions and Paramount Pictures’ “TERMINATOR: DARK FATE.”

Dusty: Always close the door.

  • Don’t allow the enemy a way in to kill you.  Close that door so the Rev. 9 can’t get it.

We get an augmented human named Grace (played by McKenzie Davis) fighting for our future in this installment.

Sky: It pays to have powerful, well-placed friends.

  • If you need an EMP, call up Major Dean.  But, why wasn’t “Major Dean” named “Major Danny Dyson” instead?

Terminator: Dark Fate Rotten Tomatoes score:

  • The Audience: 70%
  • The Critics: 84%

Lessons Learned from Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Listen to our episode on Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Dusty: Don’t stupidly fly your helicopter so close to your target.

  • If you can keep your distance and still do you job, do it.

Sky: Don’t let power go to your head.

  • Those psych ward abusers were terrible people. Psych ward abusers are cliché in movies, but it’s necessary so we’re on Sarah Connor’s side as she’s beating them to escape.

Our trio of Heroes: Sarah and John Connor (Linda Hamilton and Edward Furlong) and the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger)

Dusty: Never Jerk the wheel when you are driving.

  • Stay calm and controlled or else it’s flipping/spinning time.

Sky: Learn to pick locks.

  • It worked for Sarah Connor, it’ll work for you as well.

The best scene: the canal chase with that awesome shotgun

Dusty: Have an arsenal because you’ll be glad when it comes in use.

  • You never know what the future will bring, but always be prepared.

Nothing more scary than the unrelenting T-1000 (Robert Patrick)

Sky: Always know your nearest metal smelting plant.

  • Terminators, zombies, psycho-hose beasts, they can all be destroyed by molten metal.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day Rotten Tomatoes score:

  • The Audience: 94%
  • The Critics: 93%

Zombieland (2009) and Double Tap | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned

Zombieland and the Double Tap sequel are incredibly fun movies!  We loved the relentless zombie-killing, blood and gore, slow motion action, fun characters and comedic moments in both. Plus, Bill Murray and Elvis’ blue suede shoes!

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movies before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Zombieland: Double Tap

Listen to our episode on Zombieland: Double Tap

Dusty: Always confirm your kill.

  • Don’t give them a chance to get up and scurry away or resume their attack on you.

Sky: Always strive to do and be better.

  • This is exemplified by Tallahassee’s drive to earn zombie kill of the year instead of just kill of the week.

The 4 back for more (Breslin, Harrelson, Stone and Eisenberg)

Dusty: Never park your car in someone else’s driveway.

  • In more ways than one 🙂

Sky: Kids learn by example.

  • Little Rock left her sister just like they left Tallahassee in Columbus with the stupid little note. This is a learned behavior.  Watch what you do in front of your kids because they’re going to copy you.

Great additions to Zombieland: Nevada (Rosario Dawson), Albuquerque (Luke Wilson) and Flagstaff (Thomas Middleditch)

Dusty: The world is your toilet.

  • Out in the woods, in a swamp, your own backyard… it’s okay to whip it out.

Big fans of Madison here!

Sky: “If you love something, you shoot it in the face so it doesn’t become a flesh-eating monster.”

  • Yeppers, in the zombie apocalypse you don’t want your loved ones to turn and eat you.

Zombieland: Double Tap Rotten Tomatoes score:

  • The Audience: 90%
  • The Critics: 67%

Check out the IMDB page for more info.

Lessons Learned from Zombieland (2009)

Listen to our episode on Zombieland

Sky: Live in the now!

  • If the world you’re living in won’t allow for the things you want to do, especially if your life is on the line, don’t do it.

Dusty: Don’t waste your ammo.

  • No more is being made and this is the stuff that’s helping to keep you alive. Be smart with it, Tallahassee.

Dusty loves the level-action rifle

Sky: Enjoy the little things.

  • Great lesson, take joy in the things you love to do.

Dusty: Don’t do things that bring attention to yourself, especially when your life is on the line.

  • Running an amusement park at night with the lights and music?!  Bad choice.

Some creative deaths in Zombieland

Generated by IJG JPEG Library

Sky: Don’t prop the door open.

  • You’ve turned a safe exit into a portal of danger.  Know where it is, clear the way and be ready to use it.

A zombie-fied Bill Murray!

Dusty: Don’t give your gun to anybody!

  • Holy cow, bad choices made by everybody right and left in Zombieland.

Gemini Man | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned #70

Gemini Man was a little fun, but that CG pulled us right out of the movie every time. Fun story, though, with Mission Impossible overtones.

Lessons Learned from Gemini Man

Sky: If you’ve gotta own a van, choose double-sliding doors so you always have an exit.

  • And, wire that puppy so the doors can open while driving (unless kids are in the car).

Dusty: When fighting your clone, just put a bullet in their head.

  • When it’s you or him, you gotta choose #1.

Junior vs gristled veteran Henry Brogan

Sky: As a spy, your government will eventually come after you.  Have an escape plan.

  • Hatch in floor, check!  Bug out bag with guns and cash, check!  Good looking chick to escape with, check!

Dusty: Look for bugs.

  • They’re always listening.
  • Pick-up your own listening device detector (bug wand).

The only time Brogan (and Dusty) experiences happiness

Dusty: Know yourself.

  • If it’s you you’re fighting, you know what would attract you, so use that against you (understand?).

The CG is more believable in the darkend scenes.  Don’t get me started on that ending scene in broad daylight.  Yeesh!

If you missed it, last week we discussed Joker.

Joker | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned #69

Joker was a bleak, depressing movie.  No fun, no excitement and all drama without the characteristic genius evil-doing Batman-nemesis that we grew up with.  But, Joaquin Phoenix was good.

Sky didn’t bother with lessons learned from the bleak and boring Joker.

Rambo: Last Blood #67

Rambo: Last Blood was a fitting send-off for our beloved Vietnam veteran.  Revenge action and violence has never been more visceral nor satisfying.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Rambo: Last Blood

Sky: Send your kids off to school with protection.

  • That Damascus steel letter opener was pretty sweet and a great idea for dorm safety.

Dusty: Never go to Mexico.

  • There are so many safer yet just as beautiful countries to visit.  There’s Canada and we’ve still got Hawaii!

Dusty loves the level-action rifle

Sky: You’re never going to convince somebody to NOT do something if their mind and heart are set on it.

  • We all saw it coming, Gabrielle was not got going to obey Uncle John nor Grandma.

Dusty: Over communicate.

  • This is a lesson for just about every movie we watch.  Communication can solve most problems.  Let’s work together, people!

Sky’s favorite death!!!

Sky: Never ask a question you don’t want the answer to.

  • There was nothing Gabrielle’s father could’ve said to make her happy.  No matter the answer, after asking the question “Why did you leave?”, she’s going to feel worse than before. “Actions speak louder than words.”

Rambo watched Home Alone and took all the wrong, murderous lessons from it

Sylvester Stallone stars as ‘John Rambo’ in Rambo V Last Blood. Photo credit: Yana Blajeva.

Dusty: Get a backhoe and get to work on your doomsday bunker.

  • What a great stash for your canned foods and for hunting bad guys.

If you missed it, last week we learned from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) #66

We’re huge fans of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.  Great writing and a fun story with killer action, witty dialogue and cool comic booky, video-gamey visuals.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Sky: Persistence is critical.

  • If you have a dream, pursue it.  The Sex Bob-ombs kept gigging and finally landed a contract (ill-fated, but they landed it) and Scott finally got the girl.

Dusty:   Never cheat on anybody you’re dating.

  • Cheaters have no honor nor respect for themselves or the one they’re with.  Doesn’t matter how hard it is, do the right thing.

Vegan powers!!!

JP Sears: If Meat Eaters Acted Like Vegans

Sky: Wallace said, “If you want something bad, you  have to fight for it.

  • It goes with the first lesson, but it’s an important idea for success in life.

Ramona gets some action with this awesome large-handled Mjolnir!

Sky & Dusty: Don’t partake of anything an enemy gives you.

  • Any enemy would only have ulterior motives behind giving you anything.

Angel Has Fallen | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned #65

Angel Has Fallen was a bummer of a movie!  Too predictable and nowhere nearly as enjoyable as its predecessors.  What a terrible way to conclude a franchise.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Angel Has Fallen

Dusty’s 3-parter:

  1. Grab your victim’s guns.
  2. Beware of your surroundings and always know the exits.
  3. Train as if it’s real so you won’t be dead when it is.

Sky:  Simple plans are the most effective.

  • Their plan was too fantastical. Kill the president, that’s it. Why set somebody up for the fall and kill every secret service agent?

Nick Nolte… Angel’s only saving grace

Dusty: Get a phone and start live streaming everything

  • Use the technology of today to begin proving your innocence.

Sky:  Don’t get plastic surgery.

  • Now you look fake.

We’re not plastic surgery fans.

Dusty: Lions do what lions do

  • When the crap hits the fan, you react naturally and show your true stripes.

Gerard Butler as Mike Banning.

Sky: It’s better to know when to quit than to stick around and hurt your loved ones.

  • Maybe not a great lesson, but Dusty’s right.  If you need to change, work to change for the betterment of yourself and your loved ones.
