Sky: “You drown, not by falling into the river, but by staying submerged in it.”

  • You can’t deny the wisdom of this statement and it can be applied to any difficult things you face throughout your life.

Dusty: You can survive a 130 meter fall into water from a cliff.

  • Hecka scary, though!

Sky: Money is the great seducer.

  • Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) thought he could trust his friend Gaspar (played by David Harbour). But, Gaspar lives in a dirty, dangerous city and a couple million bucks will get him and his wife to Fiji in no time.

Dusty: Preparation leads to success.

  • Tyler had everything he needed to handle a war zone on him when he went to extract Ovi.

The director, Sam Hargrave, also played Gaeten the sniper.

Sky: Backup and support is critical.

  • Whether you’re taking part in a military mission or simply trying to do a new business venture, you’re more likely to be successful if you have a team of people supporting.

Dusty: Think ahead and be proactive, not reactive.

  • Being reactive limits your options. Being proactive puts you in charge and you have more options to achieve your goals. This fits with the prior lesson from Dusty, because looking ahead helps you to see what you may need in the future, so you can prepare yourself for it.

Check out last week’s episode on Tombstone.

Tombstone (1993) Starring Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer

Tombstone is the best western the two of us have ever seen. Great acting and action make this compelling story a true classic.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Life Lessons Learned from Tombstone

Sky: A tough life breeds tough men.

  • The west was a tough place to live, and it created men like the Earp’s, Doc Holliday and the Cowboys.  Life’s too good now, and it doesn’t create men like it used to (except for Jocko Willink).

Dusty: Don’t be goaded into a gun fight.

  • You’re better off walking away, assuming they’ll let you. Fighting, whether with fists, knives or guns, is the last resort.

Sky & Dusty: Avoid temptation.

  • Women, drugs, alcohol, sugary foods, gambling. Whatever your vice is, if you don’t want to slip up, stay far away from it. Wyatt Earp knew better when he went riding with Josephine.

There’s no reasoning with the unreasonable.

Sky: You can’t reason with unreasonable people.

  • The Cowboys are murderers (as evidenced from the beginning wedding scene). They don’t care if they deserve what happens to them, they want it their way or you’re dead.

Dusty: Stand up for your friends.

  • Doc Holliday could’ve easily avoided every fight in this one, but he stuck by his friend to the end.

Check out last week’s episode on Green Street Hooligans.

Green Street Hooligans (2005) Starring Charlie Hunnam and Elijah Wood

Green Street Hooligans is a violent yet compelling movie about having your friend’s back and never backing down from a fight. Definitely worth watching for the story line and seeing Elijah Wood’s soft character of Matt Buckner grow under the wing of Charlie Hunnam’s tough-as-nails character Pete Dunham.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Sky: Never leave a mate behind.

  • Loyalty is important in this life; to your friends, your family, your country.

Dusty: Giving is better than receiving.

  • It’s great knowing your friends have your back, but as Matt Buckner (Elijah Wood) says, it’s even better knowing you have their backs.

Sky: Get a hint.

  • When a legendary ruffian (Tommy Hatcher played by Geoff Bell) tells you to “shut your yammer” with 4 tough blokes backing him, do it!

Dusty: Don’t let how others view you dictate your life.

  • Pete’s and the GSE’s mission to have the best rep among all the firms led to his eventual death.

Matt Buckner (Elijah Wood) goes from a weak “journo” to a tough street fighter.

Sky: Don’t take it easy on kids and let them win.

  • If winning is difficult, they’ll work harder for it. Self esteem is better when it comes from accomplishments than via somebody giving you the win.

Dusty: We learn so much more through failure than through winning.

  • Examining your losses, finding your mistakes and working to not repeat them are critical for growth.

Check out last week’s episode on The Naked Gun (1988).

The Naked Gun (1988) starring Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley

We loved The Naked Gun! Leslie Nielsen’s comedic genius is on full display in this perfect comedy from the team that brought us Airplane!, Kentucky Fried Movie and Top Secret.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from The Naked Gun

Sky: Always wait for backup.

  • Confronting drug dealers solo, like Nordberg did, is a huge mistake.

Dusty: Don’t eat anything that makes you faint when you smell it.

  • Also, check the expiration date.

This cast nailed their comedic roles (OJ Simpson as Nordberg, Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin and George Kennedy as Captain Ed)

Sky: Disconnect the electronics when you’re finished broadcasting.

  • Frank made a huge mistake hitting the head after the press conference. Nowadays, so many people are using Zoom for meetings or school, the worst thing would be if you keep the cameras or screen share going as you stand up from your chair naked or hop on a porn site.

Dusty: Always have around in the chamber.

  • Guns have a safety switch for a reason. Keep on chambered so you’re ready to rock and roll.

Sky’s choice of the Full Body Condom as his prop fits with last week’s “Anal Intruder” prop.

Sky: Learn your national anthem because you never know when you’ll be required to sing it.

  • For one, it’s your national anthem. For another, you don’t want to look foolish in front of a crowd.

Reggie Jackson (real!) and Queen Elizabeth II (also real!)

Check out last week’s episode on Top Secret.

Top Secret Movie Review (1984) Starring Val Kilmer

Top Secret is a visually comedic tour de force. It’s a must-see comedy from the 80’s (don’t listen to this in the background while washing dishes). Fun characters & plot elements + Val Kilmer + visual gags = comedic genius!

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Top Secret

Listen to our episode on Top Secret

Dusty: Don’t change clothes in full view of others.

  • Windows and doors = opportunity to peep. And somebody is always watching.

Sky: Be careful with your sexual toys.

  • C or D batteries are okay. But if it requires plugging in, use it with a friend and have a safe word like “Batman!”

Movie prop of the century! What a conversation starter…

Dusty & Sky: Be perceptive of your surroundings.

  • Keep yourself safe with your head on a swivel and look for danger around every corner, cows with boots and funny gags.

Loved the French revolutionary’s names like Montage, Deja Vu, Croissant, Souffle, Escargot, Latrine and Chocolate Mousse.

Dusty: Avoid uncomfortable situations and wait until your name is called.

  • A cringe worthy situation was narrowly avoided when Nick Rivers went up to address the crowd.

Sky:  Learn the language before you visit a foreign country.

  • Download a language app and practice daily before your next big trip. Learning the basics will help you feel more comfortable and enjoy your time more in a foreign country.

If you don’t pay attention, you’ll miss the swinging rag dolls.
