Die Hard (1988) | Spoiler Review and Lessons Learned #23

Die Hard is one of the best action movies of all time.  It turned Bruce Willis into a major star, and gave us the incredible Alan Rickman on the big screen for the first time.  Fun story, great direction, good musical score and perfect acting.  We had a fun time discussing this one.

Lessons Learned from Die Hard

Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by trying to hurt somebody’s feelings to make yourself feel better.

  • John McClane made a bad move when he said “Guess you didn’t miss my name.” Come on buddy you’re trying to patch things up, don’t start a war.

Make fists with your toes to relieve flight stress.

  • Dusty said it’s a lesson learned, but it’s never worked for him.  Give it a shot and see if it works for you.  Maybe just eat some Twinkies instead like Sgt. Al Powell (Reginald Veljohnson).

When you’re approaching your target keep your gun up and ready to fire.

  • It looked cool, but Karl holding his gun up as he slowly walked across the roof was rather stupid. When you see the enemy it takes you a few milliseconds to aim the gun before you pull the trigger. Give yourself a better chance of nailing the enemy by keeping the gun level.

Make sure the guy you kill is dead.

  • McClane made a big mistake just leaving Karl hanging up there.  No worries, though, about Hans Gruber coming back after this fall.

“Next time you have the chance to kill someone, don’t hesitate.”

  • That is the absolute truth. If they are going to kill you, don’t hesitate and do it to them before they can do it to you.

Reiterated from prior lessons learned: You don’t have to get close when you’re holding a gun.

  • Yep, stay back.  Bullets can fire across the room.
