Fantasy Island 2020 Review

Fantasy Island is a fun, not-really-horror movie. Fun actors playing relatable characters with a crazy story in a beautiful island setting… and Chastity! What’s not to love?

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Fantasy Island

Listen to our episode on Fantasy Island

Sky: What goes around comes around.

  • Don’t be surprised when the school girl you picked on comes back for revenge.

Dusty: Don’t turn your back on danger.

  • Never leave the room when the stove is on, when your baby is in the bathtub, or turn your back when little kids are swimming.

A beautiful island, but we’ll never be guests here.

Dusty: Always carry a weapon.

  • Sloan was kidnapped and on the run, but she didn’t even try to pickup a rock or a stick to use as a weapon.

Sky: Regret is a disease.

  • Living in the past robs you of enjoying the now. Gwen (Maggie Q) missed out on a lovely family due to the guilt she felt over Nick’s death.

Great torture scene with Melanie (Lucy Hale) choosing instead to save Sloan (Portia Doubleday).

Dusty: If at all possible, keep yourself safe while fighting. Live to fight another day.

  • Michael Rooker’s Damon crash tackled Dr. Torture off the cliff instead of try to kick him off the ledge.

Sky: Never separate.

  • When in caves and being chased by baddies, there’s power in numbers. Separating is the last thing you want to do. And pickup a weapon!

Michael Rooker was under-utilized.

Rotten Tomatoes scores:

  • The Audience: 47%
  • The Critics: 10%

Grades:

  • B+ from Sky
  • B- from Dusty

‘Ready Or Not’ Movie Review | Lessons Learned to NOT Married Into Crazy Families

ready or not

Ready Or Not was a fun “get ’em” horror movie but isn’t one either of us are likely to watch again. Sky recommends it, Dusty… not so much.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Ready Or Not

Listen to our episode on Ready Or Not

Sky: If someone’s hunting you, don’t freak out. It’s just a person.

  • It ain’t Freddy or Jason.  Calm down, breath, turn the tables and attack back.

Dusty: Never turn to a kid for help when you are going to die.

  • What the heck is a 10-year old going to do to save your life?!

Some good bloody fun in Ready Or Not.

Sky: You can’t choose your family, but you can choose to not be a part of it.

  • Alex (and Daniel) hated their family.  Don’t bring others into your family through marriage if it’s an unhealthy situation that they’d hate to be in.

Dusty: When the danger is still clear and present, save the explanations after you get to safety.

  • You don’t need to know, all that matter is they’re trying to kill you.  Just do all you can to get away.

Samara Weaving was perfect as Grace.

Sky: Stay in shape enough to jump over fences.

  • As long as you can hop over a fence, you can escape from zombies and killer in-laws (and butlers).

Dusty: Grab your enemy’s gun.

  • You need every advantage you can get, and Grace skipping the kid’s gun was a huge mistake.

We loved seeing the come-up-pence this family receives at the end.

Rotten Tomatoes scores:

  • The Audience: 78%
  • The Critics: 88%

Grades:

  • B from Sky
  • D+ from Dusty

Army of Darkness (1993) | Review and Lessons Learned #58

Army of Darkness is still one of our favorites!  We saw it back in ’93 with our grandma and a cousin, but the two of us enjoyed it more than anyone else in the theater.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Lessons Learned from Army of Darkness

Dusty: Always have a firearm on you.

  • You need something to protect yourself (and to battle the deadite armies that are inevitably on their way).

Sky: Do not read from the Necronomicon.

  • It’s like saying Beetlejuice three times, just don’t take the chance (whether you believe or not).

This is my boomstick!

Dusty: Pay attention to details.

  • When something important comes up (like reciting some tough to remember Latin words with dire consequences for messing up), you’ve got to do what you must to get it correct.  This holds true for your boss at work or your wife giving you a complicated task.

Alternate Ending – 6 century sleep gone wrong

Sky: Learn from your mistakes.

  • Mistakes are fine to make, as long as you work to not repeat them. This is something I’m always working on as a poker player. Every mistake is your opportunity to improve yourself. So when Ash made the mistake the first time of not writing the words down and not reciting them properly, he should realize that he’s not all that adept at remembering unfamiliar Latin terms, so he should figure out a way around this. Writing them down is one solution.

We love the absurdity that is Army of Darkness

Dusty:  Keep chemistry books in the back of your car JIC you need to make some gun powder.

  • Yep, right there next to your bag full of spare clothes.

We are super huge fans of the skeleton army

Sky: Don’t pick a fight with the guy with a gun.

  • “Good… Bad… I’m the guy with the gun.”
