The Saint Movie Review Spying & Heisting with Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue (1997)

The Saint

The Saint was a fun movie in 1997, but the story telling doesn’t work for today’s audience. The performances of Kilmer and Shue are great, but they’re encumbered by a slow moving story. There are better spy and heist movies we’d recommend over this one.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Life Lessons Learned from The Saint

Sky: Don’t take a job just for the money, especially from a victim of one of your crimes.

  • Simon meeting and negotiating with the Tretiak’s makes no sense. They have it in for you, Simon!

Dusty: Always have an escape.

  • Simon demonstrated this rule very well with his break-fall truck placed 20 stories below. Dangerous, but smart.

Kilmer’s nerdy reporter disguise fits right in.

Sky: There ARE hookers with a heart of gold.

  • That hooker took them in and gave them clothes and a place to warm up, but then grandma turned them in. Just like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, they really do exist.

Dusty:  Learn how to disguise your voice.

  • Great party trick, and can also put the bad guys off your scent.

A fun scene with Simon portraying his own handler while negotiating with the Tretiak’s.

Rotten Tomatoes scores:

  • The Audience: 63%
  • The Critics: 30%

Grades:

  • B+ from Dusty
  • D+ from Sky

Kingsman Movie Review The Secret Service (2014)

kingsman movie review

Kingsman: The Secret Service is an awesomely fresh take on the spy genre. Firth, Egerton and Strong knocked it out of the park, as did the incredible fight scenes, cinematic visuals and fun soundtrack.

How many Kingsman movies are there?

Two so far, but we’re looking forward to the upcoming prequel, The King’s Man. The first two movies are Kingsman: The Secret Service and the sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

SPOILER ALERT!  Watch the movie before proceeding.

Dusty & Sky: “True nobility is being superior to your former self.”

  • We loved this line from Galahad (Colin Firth). Always work to be 1% better every day.

Firth killed it (and everyone else) in our favorite scene.

Dusty: Lock the door so they cannot leave when you fight.

  • This great scene reminder Dusty of another of his favorite movies, A Bronx Tale.

Sky: If it’s too good to be true, it is.

  • Valentine giving free access… there’s a catch, right? A billionaire giving away free stuff?  Nah, nothing nefarious here.

Eggsy (Egerton) picking up where his mentor left off. Time to wack some wankers. Lock the doors!

Dusty: Never steal a car.

  • It’s not worth the trouble for a few minutes of joy riding fun.

Sky: Don’t let anybody put digital anything in your body.

  • Are you friggin’ kidding me?!

Mark Strong as Merlin was fantastic (the rest were pretty cool, too)

Rotten Tomatoes scores:

  • The Audience: 84%
  • The Critics: 74%

Grades:

  • A+ from Sky
  • A from Dusty
